The remainder of San Miguel County encompasses the Town of Ophir, the Down Valley area (Sawpit, Fall Creek, Placerville), and various real estate developments on all of the mesas throughout the county, including the Town of Norwood to the West. The winding Last Dollar Road, the most famous road in San Miguel County, passes through working ranches and other large parcel land, where horses, elk and deer are common sights. The drive is perfect in the summer, after the various wildflowers have bloomed, or in the fall as the aspen trees begin to turn golden.

Within San Miguel County, Telluride and Mountain Village offer two very different tourist experiences. The two towns are connected by a free gondola transportation system. And both cater to luxury single-family residences, condominiums, or even large parcel ranches or mesa land.
